Fractional VP of Sales in Ontario

Most founder-led companies do not need a full-time VP of Sales. They need what a VP of Sales actually does... the strategy, the coaching, the discipline of a real sales process... without a permanent quarter-million-dollar line on the payroll. That is the whole idea of a fractional VP of Sales. You get senior sales leadership a few days a month, priced to the size you are now, not the size you are pretending to be.

I am Ashley Wesley, a fractional VP of Sales and HR based in Guelph, Ontario. I work with owner-led and family-run Ontario companies, usually between 20 and 500 people, that have a sales team but no one senior actually running it.

What does a fractional VP of Sales do?

The title sounds grand. The work is practical. In the first ninety days I am usually doing some version of the same three things.

First, I find out why the numbers look the way they do. Not the story the team tells at the sales meeting... the real picture underneath it. Where deals actually stall, which reps are carried by one or two accounts, what your pipeline is really worth once you strip out the wishful thinking.

Second, I put in the basics that most growing companies skip. A sales process people follow. A compensation plan that pays for the behaviour you want, not just the revenue that would have closed anyway. A cadence of coaching so your best people stay and your average people improve.

Third, I build toward not needing me. A fractional leader who makes themselves permanent is doing it wrong. The goal is a team and a system that runs when I am not in the room.

When should you hire a fractional VP of Sales instead of a full-time one?

A full-time VP of Sales in Ontario is a large, permanent commitment, and the cost of getting that hire wrong is brutal... months of lost momentum, a team that scatters, and a search you have to run all over again. Founders feel that risk, so they often wait too long, running the sales team themselves while everything else waits.

Fractional leadership is the bridge. It makes sense when you have a team but no leader, when you are between VPs and the seat cannot sit empty, or when you know you will need a full-time leader eventually but cannot yet justify or afford one. You get the senior judgment now, and when the time comes to hire the permanent leader, you are hiring from strength with someone who knows exactly what the role needs.

What does a fractional VP of Sales cost in Ontario?

Mine is straightforward. Fractional VP of Sales engagements are $1,000 per day, and you pay for days worked, nothing more. No retainer for a seat I am not filling, no long lock-in. Availability is limited, on purpose, because this only works when I am genuinely in your business and not spread across a dozen of them.

If what you actually need is to hire your own sales leader rather than rent one, that is a different service... my retained search and the Sales Leadership Certainty System, where the focus is selection: helping you choose the right leader, not just the one who interviews well.

Proof it works

Over roughly a decade advising T&T Power Group, the company grew from about $35 million to $150 million in revenue and from 60 to 400 people. With Donaldson & James, the right sales staffing lifted sales about 30 percent in a year. The pattern repeats because the problem is almost never effort. It is that no one senior is steering the sales function with a real process behind it.

When should a company hire a fractional VP of Sales?

When you have a sales team but no senior leader running it, when you are between full-time VPs, or when you know you will need sales leadership soon but cannot yet justify a permanent hire. It is the bridge between founder-led selling and a full-time VP of Sales.

Do you serve companies outside Guelph?

Yes. I am based in Guelph and work with owner-led and mid-market companies across Ontario, typically between 20 and 500 employees.
